Guest Speaker for San Marcos Banquet Announced

We are pleased to announce that Peter Heed will be our guest speaker for the banquet on Friday!

Peter Heed has been racing canoes for more than 35 years. He was introduced to canoe racing in the late 1970's, after 12 years of rugby left him with some significant injuries and looking for a new athletic challenge. Peter originally began in the world of whitewater downriver racing, and then shifted his energies to marathon canoe events. Since then Peter has placed in the top ten of every major professional marathon canoe race in North America. He continues to race competitively and conducts canoe coaching clinics throughout the country.

Peter has won 11 National age-group titles, and is a former member of the US Marathon Canoe Team, placing 6th at the World Marathon Canoe Championships in Luxembourg, 1982. Peter served as President of The United States Canoe Association for four years , and was honored as "Canoeist of the Year" in 2000. In 1993, Peter co-authored the book "Canoe Racing: Competitors Guide To Marathon and Downriver Canoe Racing" with Dick Mansfield. The book has been very successful and is in it's second edition. It is considered the "bible" for competitve paddlers. Peter has also produced several videos and written numerous published articles on canoe racing.. He is particularly known for his expertise on the tactics and strategy involved in marathon canoe racing.

Recently, Peter completed his 32nd General Clinton canoe marathon, and was honored as one of the inaugural inductees into the General Clinton Canoe Racing Hall of Fame.

When not racing canoes, Peter is the County Attorney (Chief Prosecutor) for Cheshire County in New Hampshire, where he also served the State as its Attorney General in 2002-2003. He is also active in community theater, acting and singing in numerous leading roles with various stage groups in southern New Hampshire. Peter resides in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, on the banks of the Conn. River with his lovely wife, Tricia, who is also an active paddler and athlete.

The banquet will be held June 8th, 4:30 p.m. at the Aquarena Center, headwaters of the San Marcos River.
